Chapter 7

Janet walked out of the hospital feeling like a wretched mess. Holding in those feelings for so long was taking a toll on her mentally. She needed to blow off some steam. Although she was in a fucked up predicament, she needed time to herself. Without even thinking, she got in her car and drove in the direction of The Crab Tavern, a bar in Darby Township. It was a decent enough distance from home, so if she got too drunk she’d not have to travel far.

Pulling into the parking lot, she heard the music playing inside. Grabbing her credit card from her wallet, she threw her purse in the backseat and put it under a blazer. She quickly got out of the car and walked toward the entrance. Men and women stared at her, but Janet had no intention of socializing. Being alone with some drinks was the only company she could stand.

She ordered an apple martini and took a seat at the far left end of the bar. She watched the people around her and took in the atmosphere. There were older people line dancing and enjoying themselves.

A few brief moments later the bartender was back with her drink.

“Thank you.”

Janet wasted no time diving into the smooth drink. It’d been a while since she’d been able to enjoy herself. After finishing the first drink, she found herself ordering various cocktails. By the fifth drink, she felt mellow. Singing and dancing along with the music in her seat, Janet was completely lost in the moment.

“Excuse me, miss?” the bartender interrupted her groove.

“Yes,” Janet said and gave him a chipper smile.

“This is for you.” The bartender placed a pretty reddish pink drink in front of her.

“I didn’t order this. What is it?” Janet slurred.

“I know. It’s a Cosmo. That lady over there ordered it for you,” she said, pointing across the room.

Janet squinted her eyes to try to focus on who she was pointing at.

“I guess. I have no idea who that is, but she looks familiar,” Janet responded, but turned around to see that the bartender was busy making a drink for someone else.

Janet swiveled her body back to face the bar and started to sip the drink.

A slight tap on her shoulder. “Hey there,” the woman said with a smile.

“Umm, hey,” Janet stuttered.

“I take it you don’t remember me,” the woman said as she took a seat next to her.

Janet studied her closely. “Ohh, I remember you now. I bumped into you at the grocery store.”

“Yup. We didn’t formally introduce ourselves. I’m Brinae. Who might I have the pleasure of sitting next to tonight?” she asked as she batted her eyes at Janet.

“Well, I’m Janet. Interesting name you have there. I knew someone with Brinae as a middle name.”

Janet extended her hand and Lové shook it.

Lové smiled deviously at Janet. She had to use Lovette’s middle name because Lové was not who needed Janet to know just yet.

“So what brings you out tonight?” Lové smiled.

Janet thought about her answer and knew there was no way she was telling a complete stranger about her personal issues.
